Swiss Residence

Swiss Residence for Retirees

Retired individuals may be able to apply for residence in Switzerland depending on nationality, financial means, health insurance, personal ties, canton and absence of gainful activity.

Advisory disclaimer: General information only. Retirement residence eligibility depends on nationality, financial means, canton and individual circumstances. Consult qualified Swiss immigration and tax professionals.

EU/EFTA Retirees

EU/EFTA nationals who are retired and can demonstrate sufficient financial means and health insurance may generally establish Swiss residence under the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons. Registration with the cantonal migration authority is required. The process is generally more straightforward than for non-EU/EFTA nationals.

Key points

  • —Free movement framework applies
  • —Sufficient pension income or assets required
  • —Health insurance mandatory
  • —Registration with cantonal authority required
  • —B permit issued initially; C permit after qualifying period

UK Retirees

UK nationals who retired after Brexit are treated as third-country nationals. Residence requires cantonal and federal approval. UK nationals who were resident in Switzerland before 1 January 2021 may hold protected status. Individual legal advice is recommended.

Key points

  • —Post-Brexit: third-country national rules apply
  • —Cantonal and federal approval required
  • —Sufficient means and health insurance required
  • —Acquired rights may apply for pre-2021 residents
  • —Individual legal review recommended

US Retirees

US nationals are treated as third-country nationals. Retirement-based residence requires demonstration of sufficient financial means, health insurance and absence of gainful activity. Cantonal and federal approval is required. US citizens also have ongoing US tax reporting obligations regardless of Swiss residence.

Key points

  • —Third-country national rules apply
  • —Cantonal and federal approval required
  • —Sufficient means and health insurance required
  • —US tax reporting obligations continue (FBAR, FATCA)
  • —Both Swiss and US tax advice recommended

Non-EU Retirees

Non-EU/EFTA retirees face the most restrictive rules. Residence requires individual cantonal and federal approval, demonstration of sufficient financial means, health insurance and absence of gainful activity in Switzerland. Approval is not guaranteed.

Key points

  • —Subject to non-EU/EFTA quota and approval system
  • —Cantonal and federal approval required
  • —Sufficient means and health insurance required
  • —No gainful activity in Switzerland
  • —Individual legal review essential

Lump-Sum Taxation Candidates

High-net-worth retirees who do not carry out gainful activity in Switzerland may be eligible for lump-sum taxation in certain cantons. This is a tax arrangement, not a residence route — residence must be obtained separately. Cantonal and federal approval is required for both the residence permit and the lump-sum taxation arrangement.

Key points

  • —Tax arrangement, not a residence route
  • —Available in selected cantons only
  • —No gainful activity in Switzerland required
  • —Minimum expenditure base required
  • —Cantonal and federal approval required
  • —Qualified Swiss tax advice essential
